Preston FM is pleased to announce the launch of its new opportunities helping to engage young people in community radio. In conjunction with v, the youth volunteering charity aimed at getting young people positively involved in the community, we will be offering volunteering opportunities at Preston FM for 240 young people over the next three years, who will help to run the community station as well as to coordinate, commission and schedule a new strand of youth radio programmes. The opportunities will be flexible in terms of time commitment, area of activity and subject matter, allowing them to be adapted to fit the interests, cares and passions of a diverse group of young people.
Young people will be able to enter the project at any level, and will be encouraged to progress as far as they can; taking on mentoring, training, governance, technical and management roles as their skill and confidence grows.
The dedicated youth volunteering project will deliver opportunities at three levels:
• Short term “taster” sessions offering workshops in skills such Audio Production, DJ/MCing and Radio Journalism. • Part-time opportunities in which participants will undertake an accredited level 2 training course in community radio and form teams to create full programmes, news features, music projects, promotional events and other activities associated with Preston FM. • Full-time placement opportunities lasting a minimum of three months, where participants will be able to develop their interests and skills in programme production, on-air activity, technical support, studio management, training delivery or other areas of community radio that interest them.
